Flat Lauren at Waikiki

Sophie's cousin Lauren recently sent Sophie a "Flat Lauren." Sophie's job: Show Flat Lauren a good time around Oahu, and take pictures to send back to Lauren's class in Florida. If this makes no sense to you, it's because you haven't read the book Flat Stanley, by Jeff Brown, in which a boy named Stanley Lambchop is accidentally squashed flat by a bulletin board. Although being practically two-dimensional might sound like a drag, Stanley gets to do fun things like get sent in an envelope to visit his friend in another state - no plane fare plus exhorbitant fees for baggage for him!

Apparently thousands of school children around the world each year make their own Flat Stanley's, or Flat Alter Egos, and send them to other children to document their adventures. So, in the spirit of literacy and adventure, we dutifully brought Flat Lauren to her first shindig, a bbq at Waikiki for our friend Kendra's birthday. Kendra is the one with the lei; Josh is her husband. I'm betting you can pick out Flat Lauren, or FL, as she shall be known from now on, all by yourself.

After the party, we walked by the Military Museum so that Daniel could take a picture in front of a tank that looks just like the one on his shirt. FL came along, too. How many other Flats do you think can boast of seeing a beautiful beach and mobile armored weaponry in the same day?

Sophie at Starbucks

The Myers are sick again this week.  Runny noses, sore throats.  Fun stuff.  Especially during Spring Break!  Sophie gets two weeks off, so hopefully she'll get over her cold in time to enjoy her holiday.  Not that she objects to lying in bed reading for hours.  I wonder who she gets that from?

Yesterday morning, Sophie accompanied Ryan to Starbucks (aka Daddy's office) armed with a few of her favorite books.  A random guy walking by was so excited that she was reading the Hardy Boys that he stopped to take her picture with his cell phone and discuss all the characters with her.

That's it for today! Coming up in future posts: The Adventures of Flat Lauren.

lame filler post

Seriously, we haven't done much lately, and when we have, we've completely forgotten the camera.

So here are two photos of Daniel with his favorite stuffed animals. Lamby Scooter is by far the best-loved, even though he seems to spend most of his days taking a nap.

The photo of Sophie is for Aunty Tara, who sent the tooth-holding pillow for future lost teeth. We knew it was in Sophie's room somewhere!

The photos I wish I had taken: The second-graders at Sophie's school took a trip to the Kewalo Tidepools. They started with a beach clean-up project - you've never seen so many kids so excited by so many discarded cigarette butts - then proceeded to the tide pools, where all sorts of fun creatures were in evidence: soft, leopard-patterned sea slugs with gently undulating frills; assorted crabs, squishy black sea cucumbers, chrysanthemum-like sea anenomes whose numbers are growing after three scarce years; a couple of sharp-toothed, bad-tempered eels; a flat-bodied fire worm whose cilia give a nasty sting.

We'll try to do better in future posts! We're finally all healthy after spending three weeks circulating a sore-throat virus through the family, so hopefully we'll we back to our regularly scheduled blogging soon!
